Phillies must quickly offer Aaron Nola a contract extension

The Philadelphia Phillies have been very active this offseason, including signing one of the most coveted players on the free agent market, Trea Turner.

But one case is still pending. Not that it’s a national emergency, but the sooner the better. We are talking here about offering a contract extension to pitcher Aaron Nola, who will become free as air at the end of this campaign.

If the City of Brotherly Love roster doesn’t want to risk losing its gunner in the free range market, it needs to move fast. The longer she waits, the more likely she is to lose one of the National League’s best pitchers.

At the moment, the right-hander is under contract for 16 million dollars this season. A new pact would be way above that mark.

The Phillies are reportedly considering a five-year deal for a total of $125 million. But that will certainly be insufficient for whoever finished fourth in the Cy Young Trophy race in 2022, both in amount of money and number of years.

According to Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio, $245 million would be the right amount to put on Nola’s next contract.

One thing is certain, this next pact will serve as a reference for the next pitchers to sign a contract extension, like Dylan Cease, Corbin Burnes and Max Fried.

A file to follow in the coming weeks.
