Boston Red Sox fans have often been heard to claim loud and clear that their proteges have never been involved in any signal theft scandal. However, they may have to reconsider their point of view.
It’s that former Red Stockings glory Mookie Betts admitted he and his teammates used live video to steal signals in 2018.
Yeah. Everyone did.
At that time, the only one found guilty was former scouting assistant JT Watkins. He was then suspended by Commissioner Rob Manfred.
But we all know he wasn’t the only one to blame. Incidentally, Betts confirms that Red Sox players paid Watkins during the 2020 season while he was suspended without pay.
The scheme was not systematic, however, as the Red Sox allegedly did not illegally steal the signals during the 2018 World Series as Boston defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers. According to Betts, this was done rarely, not daily.
Moreover, the outfielder wants credit to be given to his former team.
People try to pretend we’re cheating. Give us credit. We had a good team. We’ve had Cy Young Trophy winners. We had MVPs. We’ve had Golden Glove winners. We had all of that. Take this into account.
It is true that the small game of the Bostonians probably had no impact on the final result, but if people act as if they cheated, it may be precisely because they cheated and that should stop pretending it never happened.
