Yesterday, I laid an article to tell you that the San Diego Padres had missed their chance in the negotiations surrounding Manny Machado.
For what? Because the main interested party, who has an exit option in his contract for the winter of 2023-2024, does not want to negotiate once the camp has started. He will therefore indeed become a free agent in a year, as he said.
Many people believed that a contract extension was likely, but now it will not be the case for the excellent third baseman.
But that doesn’t change the fact that he wants to stay, at the right price, in San Diego. Seems to be his go-to option if the money is on the table.
We know that before his deadline imposed on the Padres, he received a single offer of $255 million from 2024 to 2033. Basically, the Padres would have kept the rest of the initial contract ($30 million per year from 2024 to 2028) by adding five years to it at $21 million $ per year from 2029 to 2033.
But it wasn’t enough. In fact, for the years 2024 to 2033, Machado does not want $21M or $30M per season: he wants $40M per year.
You read correctly.
According to Bob Nightengale, Machado would have asked to erase the last five years of the basic contract to sign a new contract of $ 400 million over 10 years, from 2024 to 2033.
This is not the first time that Nightengale has raised the figure of $400 million and we agree that it is big. That’s the amount the Padres reportedly offered Aaron Judge during the offseason.
Does Machado deserve so much? Is he betting on the hole his departure would create in California?
We know that the Padres will have to sign Juan Soto at nearly $500 million, he who refused $440 million in Washington last year. Is $400M a realistic amount for Manny? That remains to be seen.
Note that the Mets are seen as a threat to obtain the services of Manny Machado in a year if he is free. For what?
Because Shohei Ohtani may not want to sign in the East, in New York. Because Buck Showalter knows Machado well. Because Steve Cohen wants to win and already, a few months ago, tried to sign an excellent third baseman (Carlos Correa) for his club.
