Jose Altuve wants to end his career in Houston

The Houston Astros are the 2022 champions and the odds are excellent they will repeat their feat in 2023. To do that, they will need talented and motivated players. Jose Altuve perfectly represents what the Astros need to be crowned a second straight year because he ticks all the boxes.

The 32-year-old veteran, however, will not be able to assert himself at the start of the regular season, as he suffered a right hand injury as part of the recently disputed World Baseball Classic.

For the rest, he remains an important piece at the heart of a formation that abounds in talent. Altuve is happy in Houston and plans to spend his entire career there.

The little Venezuelan made the jump to the Majors in 2011 in an Astros uniform and he hasn’t stopped performing well since. In 12 seasons, Altuve has been considered for the MVP title seven times (he won the honor in 2017) and appeared in the All-Star Game on eight occasions.

His plan is clear: he wants to play until the age of 40. He is inspired by Craig Biggio, who spent his 20-year career in an Astros uniform and was a remarkable player in his time.

Altuve knows that his will cannot be realized without the management of the team being aligned with his objectives, but the circumstances would be favorable because Dana Brown, the club’s new general manager, thinks the same.

The latter wants to see Altuve and his teammate Alex Bregman retire in the uniform of the Astros, like Biggio and Jeff Bagwell at the time.

As of now, Altuve is still under contract with the team until 2024 after signing a seven-year ($163.5 million) contract extension in 2018.

In the short term, whoever has two World Series rings has the dream of winning a third, because the Astros have what it takes to achieve that goal again this year.

Despite his injury, Jose Altuve remains a key element within this organization and his return to the game, scheduled for June, will only increase the confidence that emerges around the team.
