Jose Abreu: the White Sox had made a “very good offer”

On Tuesday morning, Jose Abreu was introduced to the Houston press. The new Astros first baseman is therefore officially turning the page on nine years of his life.

And that, the Chicago White Sox will not forget.

For the past few weeks, a return to Chicago seemed unlikely for the first baseman. Didn’t he like the culture that was taking hold there?

Maybe.

One thing is certain: something happened. After all, he himself confirmed having received a good offer from Chicago to return.

It was a very good offer, but he didn’t want to go into the reasons that led him to refuse.

Obviously playing for Houston is more attractive to win. The club is really strong (and they don’t even cheat to get there anymore) and they are based in Florida in the spring. Abreu lives there.

We’re talking about a club that wants to improve every year (Justin Verlander and Yuli Gurriel, a player that Abreu respects a lot, are still in the Astros’ sights) and for a player, it’s an environment that is attractive.

Apart from the fact that the club has no GM, things are going well in Houston.

On this topic, Jeff Bagwell said he didn’t like the “advanced stats” trend that former GM James Click was taking. The owner was obviously not the only one not to like it.

But OK. In the end, the Astros solidified the first baseman position for 2023. They did well because Abreu was in demand.

The Red Sox were very aggressive for his services, but clubs like the Marlins and Guardians (who made a similar offer to the Astros) also worked hard to lure him to town.

But he chose the Astros.

I can’t wait to see if he will still be good in three years, he who saw his power melt away like snow in the sun in 2022. Can he find it again in 2023?

  • No GM before January for the Astros?
  • Carlos Rodon meets the Mets.
  • Should Shane Bieber leave the Guardians?
