If the Dodgers release Cody Bellinger, watch the Blue Jays

After sending outfielder Teoscar Hernandez to the Seattle Mariners, the Blue Jays need to fill the hole in the field with a left-handed hitter.

There are other needs, but hey: that will be for another time.

What’s interesting is that in MLB, tomorrow’s date is interesting and it could potentially help the Blue Jays. Why?

Because tomorrow, teams will have to decide whether to offer a contract to players who are not yet eligible for full free agency.

Basically, if a player is not qualified by his team, he becomes free as air.

Among the Blue Jays, as guys like Raimel Tapia and Bradley Zimmer have already left, we should not necessarily expect bombs.

The majority of good players are qualified, of course, but there are sometimes exceptions. And of the lot, we could note Cody Bellinger.

Bellinger’s case is intriguing. After all, after his 2019 MVP season, he made a huge jump in salary (over a 162-game season, he would have been entitled to $11.5 million), but since then he has been playing poorly and not worth his salary.

To keep his rights, the Dodgers must still offer him a higher salary than the previous year and this means that last year he received $ 17 million.

In 2023, his projected salary is $18 million. It’s too much for a guy who has been playing badly like him for a few years.

Since he’s in his last year before freelancing and the Dodgers seem ready to make some changes, he might not get an offer and become free as air tomorrow.

And if so, a club could sign him at a lower price… and it is in such a context that Jon Morosi asks us to keep the Blue Jays out of the corner of our eye.

We know that the Blue Jays want to add an outfielder who hits from the left. Obviously, the club is more looking for an established name à la Brandon Nimmo to provide stability since Bellinger is not a sure case at the moment.

But if the price is right, would Bellinger want to join a club that can revive him offensively? The question is valid.
