Giants: Jordan Hicks signs four-year contract to be a starter

As you know, the San Francisco Giants have a hard time convincing players to agree to continue their careers with them.

Result? Sometimes they have to be…creative.

This is why the club offered a four-year, $44 million contract to Jordan Hicks. That’s a lot of money for a reliever, you might say.

To which I will answer that that is why the club intends to make him a starting pitcher. That's the current plan, anyway.

This is not the first time that such a test has been carried out. In 2022, he earned eight starts for the St. Louis Cardinals. He also had 27 outings in the bullpen.

He returned to the bullpen in 2023 before being traded to the Blue Jays at the deadline. He did well in Toronto to finish the season.

The Cardinals wondered, before trading him, if it was possible to sign him to a contract extension. The negotiations, however, yielded nothing.

I wonder if he was asking, at that point, to do like Michael King and move out of the bullpen and into the rotation.

In any case, the Giants, who had trouble having traditional starters last year, are still committing to a project.

However, don't expect, if he wins his starting job, to see him go far in games. That's what Ken Rosenthal thinks.

Because the reality is, if he doesn't have a good camp as a starter, the Giants are just going to send him back to the bullpen. Same thing if he struggles during the season.

So it's all to be continued.
