Daulton Varsho is only an emergency receiver for the Blue Jays

It’s crazy how a situation can change in a short time and that’s exactly what is happening right now at the Blue Jays with Alejandro Kirk’s camp.

A few months ago, the Jays had a surplus of excellent receivers, which allowed them to trade the very promising Gabriel Moreno to the Arizona Diamondbacks in order to get their hands on Daulton Varsho. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. has also taken the direction of the desert as part of this movement of players.

Varsho is also a rookie receiver, but the Jays rely on him to patrol left field and not crouch, as the team is already well off in that sense and can rely on Danny Jansen and Kirk. Varsho has proven himself to be an excellent outfielder in addition to being an above average hitter.

However, the absence of Alejandro Kirk at the start of camp (his wife gave birth to the couple’s first child) mixed things up and we wondered if Varsho would have to put his pads back on occasionally in order to support Jansen.

But in the end, it looks like Varsho is really just a contingency plan and right now, with Kirk due to be back in games shortly, the Jays aren’t in a contingency position.

In fact, if the Jays needed a medium-term receiver, a recall would be made. Varsho, who hasn’t donned wide receiver gear in a camp game, is currently serving as the emergency receiver.

If need be, the solution could come from Rob Brantly, a 33-year-old veteran who briefly donned the New York Yankees uniform for the past two seasons.

For his part, Varsho played receiver 18 times to start games last season at Arizona, but hasn’t put on his big mitt in training camp so far.

Considering using Varsho behind the plate would change John Schneider’s strategy, as he would have to reshuffle his outfield at those exact times and that’s definitely not what he wants. But in a solution mode, it would lend itself to the game.

After all, his job is to put the best available players on the field in order to position his team in a winning situation and Varsho wants to be a good insurance policy in this sense.

The main interested party certainly does not expect to have to put on his receiver’s equipment within his new team. Professionally speaking, he will have no choice but to respond at the appropriate time if ever the need arises.

Until then, Varsho should indulge in a few video sessions to get to know the skills of the team’s pitchers better so as not to be caught off guard when needed.
