Dansby Swanson was willing to earn less to stay in Atlanta

Last year, the Atlanta Braves let go of franchise face Freddie Freeman in a much-discussed saga.

Less than a year later, another mainstay left Georgia, shortstop Dansby Swanson. But this time, everything took place in much less nebulous conditions.

Even if the two parties wanted to come to an agreement that would have brought Swanson back to Atlanta, the gap between the offer of the Chicago Cubs and that of the Braves was far too great, even if the main interested party was ready to sign at a lower cost to stay with the franchise he had spent his entire MLB career with.

This is also explained by the general manager of the brave Alex Anthopoulos.

“He got an incredible contract from a great organization. That’s what it was worth on the market. But I will say this: Dansby made every effort to find a way to stay in Atlanta. We had conversations over the summer. He was willing to take much less.

But we have to make sure we have enough payroll for 26 players and at some point it just didn’t make sense for us. It’s hard to lose a phenomenal human being and a phenomenal player. »

Swanson’s departure leaves a big void at the number six position. Asked about this, Anthopoulos expects a hot fight at training camp.

“Vaughn Grissom and Orlando Arcia will be in competition and, in the end, Brian Snitker will make the decision. We will see how they behave in the spring. And whoever gets the starting job will have to prove he can keep it. From there, their play will impact the decisions. »

Whether it’s one or the other of the protagonists who will find themselves at shortstop for the Braves, the latter will find themselves a little weakened in a division that will be even stronger than in 2022.

But let’s not count the Braves and Anthopoulos for beaten, they who have accustomed us to all kinds of prowess both on the field and outside.
